The State Ukrainian Committee of Hydrology and Meteorology observed atmospheric air pollution state in Kyiv at 16 stationary posts. It observes contents of basic polluted substances. They are dust, sulphur dioxide, oxide carbon, nitrogen dioxide, and specific matters (nitric oxide, dissolved sulphates, sulphuretted hydrogen, phenol, fluoric hydrogen, chlorous hydrogen, ammonia, benzapilene, formaldehyde, heavy metals).

A presence of heavy metals in atmospheric air (cadmium, iron, manganese, copper, nikel, lead, chrome and zinc) are marked at 5 supervisions posts. Average annual concentration and maximum monthly concentration as whole in the town and at some posts for last years do not exceed to appropriate indices GDK (connected with productions state).

The most polluted regions are invariably the regions near metro stations " Svyatoshin" and "Shulyavska", the regions of Podilsko- Kurenevskii and Darnitskii industrial knots and also the central part of the town.

Background concentration of nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen oxide is accordingly 0,1546 and 0,0953 mg/m3. The average annual concentration of nitrogen dioxide considerably exceeds GDK over the all town territory. At 9 posts from 16 concentrations were within 2 GDK. Three town regions ( Obolonskii avenue, PSZ (Air quality observation post) 17, Brest-Litovskii avenue,PSZ 11 and L.Ukrayinki avenue) have a pollution level still higher – accordingly 2,1, 2,3 and 2,1 GDK.

Maximum one time concentration about 7 GDK was observed at PSZ 11 (Brest-Litovskii avenue, 144). On other territory maximum GDK concentration was within 2-4,5 GDK. Repetition of one time concentration higher GDK is high in all regions within 30 -50%.

Maximum repetition (48%) is fixed at PSZ 11, and minimum one (1-8%) is at PSZ 5,13,15.

A presence of nitrogen oxide in atmosphere does not exceed established norms. Background concentration of sulphur dioxide is 0,0709 mg/m3. Concentration distribution is homogeneous over all the town territory. Value of concentrations is about GDK, but do not exceeds it.

Background carbon oxide concentration is 3,5449 mg/m3. Average annual concentration is lower GDK at all the posts. Only at two posts they reached GDK, it is at PSZ 7 (Besarabska square) and 20 (Moskovska square).

Maximum annual concentration is about 2 GDK. It was observed at 8 town's posts. At PSZ 6, PSZ 9 and PSZ 20 it was accordingly 3,2, 3,6 and 4 GDK.The highest concentration value was fixed on PSZ 7. It is 5,2 GDK.

Repetition percentage of one time concentrations that is higher GDK is low and does not exceed 4%, only at PSZ 6 (Peremogi square) it reached to 7%, and at PSZ 7 it is 13%.

Background dust concentration is 0,2290 mg/m3. Average annual atmosphere dusting does not exceed established norms. GDK exceeding of one time concentrations values also does not be observed.

So, Kyiv as administrative centre with developed transport infra-structure has high atmospheric air pollution in regions adjoining to motorway, crossroads. While inspecting of air quality the GDK exceeding are frequently observed by such pollutant as nitrogen dioxide, benzapilene, too.

Building industry brings its component part into general air pollution level in Kyiv, too.

Kyiv is a town of erection of new works and of intensive reconstruction, especially of municipal fund. On any building ground with earthworks or old building demolishing, there is an enormous amount of dust. So, out of earthen dumps and embankments by wind speed 5-6 m/sec from area 1 m2, 100-200 gr dust per hour can rise to the air basin. It can be carried on distance up to 10 km. Production dust joins to this dust. Production dust is formed by reason of mechanical breaking up and grinding of solids as well as by transport and shifting of loads. They are parts of fuel, metals, TETS smoke and etc. that can join the dust.
