CHANGES in the STATE of the ENVIRONMENT

Transboundary observations

Observations of transboundary transfer of polluting substances in the atmospheric air and atmospheric precipitations were carried out at the meteorological stations Svityaz (Volyn Region) and Rava-Ruska (Lviv Region).

A content of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide was observed in the atmospheric air. No values exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations as to annual average and maximum concentrations were observed; only in Rava-Ruska did the maximum concentration of nitrogen dioxide in diurnal average concentrations exceed the maximum permissible concentration 1.6 times. There were 14 cases of diurnal average maximum permissible concentrations being exceeded. No changes in transboundary transfer of impurities were observed in the atmospheric air as compared to last year.
According to data concerning each rain the atmospheric precipitations in Svityaz and Rava-Ruska included sulphates within the limits of 0.80-14.0 mg/l, nitrates 0.08-6.4 mg/l, ammonium nitrogen 0.01-4.0 mg/l, chlorides 0.0-7.06 mg/l, hydrocarbonates 0.0-15.1 mg/l, sodium 0.05-4.6 mg/l, potassium 0.09-4.15 mg/l, calcium 0.0-10.5 mg/l and magnesium 0.01-4.14 mg/l. Total mineralization of precipitations varied within 3.7-47.61 mg/l. In Svityaz and Rava-Ruska average pH values in precipitations was 6.0.

In comparison with the data of observations of 1997 as to transboundary transfer, a decrease of pollutants was observed in atmospheric precipitations in 1998.
